Product information "WLED RS-485 range extender / DMX adapter"
Product Description
This adapter extends the ABC! WLED Controller (5-24V) V43 with two RS-485 interfaces. These can be used either as a so-called "long-range extender" to transmit the data signal to LEDs over long distances, or as DMX inputs or outputs (for DMX input WLED software version 0.16.x or higher or MoonModules required).
The adapter can also be used with the ABC! WLED V73 mini controller (but with different GPIO settings!).
The first channel can be used as an RS-485 transmitter or receiver (adjustable via DIP switches) and has a switchable 120-ohm termination resistor (via DIP switch). The second channel can only be used as a transmitter (output) and has a fixed 120-ohm termination resistor.
Operation as a "Long Range Extender"
- Channel 1 and/or 2 can be used
- LED data settings in WLED: GPIO 32 for channel 1, GPIO 14 for channel 2
- Ethernet or telephone cables, for example, can be used. Or simply a twisted pair.
- The tested transmission length is up to 300 meters.
- If the controller and LED strips are powered by different power supplies, a GND connection must also be established via transmission cables.
- An RS-485 range extender receiver (available in our shop) can be used on the LED side
- DIP switch settings for channel 1: 1 & 2 ON, 3 & 4 OFF
Operation as a DMX input
- Channel 1 must be used
- WLED version 0.16.x or higher, compiled with ESP-IDF V4 required. Currently only available as an Alpha/Nightly build. Available at https://wled-install.github.io/
- Recommended DIP switch settings: 1 ON, 2 OFF, 3 ON, 4 OFF
- WLED settings for DMX input: DMX RX: GPIO 36; DMX TX: GPIO 32; DMX EN: GPIO 15
Note: The DMX specification requires that the receiver be galvanically isolated on the RS-485 interface to avoid ground loops. The adapter itself does not implement galvanic isolation. However, since LED strips used with WLED are powered by a galvanically isolated power supply, the entire controller, including the adapter and connected LEDs, is typically galvanically isolated from the AC mains and thus also from the DMX transmitter, and is only connected to it via DMX cables. This also prevents ground loops.
Operation as a DMX output
- Channel 1 must be used
- WLED software must be compiled with the WLED_ENABLE_DMX option. Furthermore, the hard-coded GPIO 2 must be changed to GPIO 32. Use a ready-made WLED version with DMX out from https://wled-install.github.io
